Khaled Al-Qazzaz, a Canadian Permanent Resident and University of Toronto alumni, is a father of four young children and former school principal in Egypt. One of Egypt's best and brightest, Khaled walked alongside the masses of Egyptians in revolution against the longstanding anti-democratic regime of Mubarak. After the revolution, he served his country under former President Morsi as Secretary to the President on Foreign Relations.
On July 3, 2013, Khaled was detained by the Egyptian military at an undisclosed location, outside of any legal process and without any allegations of wrongdoing. The Egyptian regime had not formally acknowledged his detention or disclosed his fate, causing Khaled's case to be labelled by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch as one of enforced disappearance. After more than five months of being disappeared, Khaled was taken to Tora prison where he now remains in solitary confinement.
